KeePass review.
Control over your password file comes with upkeep.
Based on official documentation. Hands-on testing: not performed. Numeric rating: not assigned.
Our take
Consider KeePass when control over a password database matters more to you than a ready-made account service. Its lack of a licence fee is useful, but the real commitment is maintaining a workflow you can recover. A simpler routine you reliably follow is preferable to a complicated setup you cannot restore.
A good fit for
Creators and site operators comfortable looking after local files and backups.
Think twice if
Anyone expecting a support team to reset the master key, or a single official mobile app to handle everything.
Strengths & limitations
What stands out
What to weigh up
- Losing any required master-key component can make the database inaccessible. The project documents no universal key or recovery backdoor. [3]
- You arrange storage and synchronization access. The documentation discusses local files, servers, cloud-folder integrations, and optional plugins; this requires setup choices. [4]
- Android and iOS options appear as contributed or unofficial ports. Their developers, features, costs, and maintenance need separate checks. [5]
What it costs
The project’s FAQ says KeePass may be used in a company without paying fees. Donations are optional support for the project, rather than a required subscription. [1]
This zero-fee assessment applies to the original KeePass application. The downloads page lists other applications and ports separately; it does not establish that every third-party option is free. [5]
Where it fits in your work
For a creator business, the practical issue is continuity: could you still access your essential accounts after replacing a device? Keep a recovery plan for the database and its required keys, and rehearse it with noncritical data. This is workflow advice, not an independent security audit.
What this review does not establish
We have not installed KeePass, audited its encryption, tested a database restore, or evaluated plugins or mobile ports. This review covers the original KeePass 2.x documentation; it is not a review of KeePassXC or another separate application.
Product claims and published prices can change. The check date records when we read the sources; it is not a safety certification.
Affiliate & referral status
The project’s support guidance asks for donations and community contributions. We did not verify a commission-based affiliate program, attribution window, or payout terms. This review links directly to the original project and makes no earnings claim. [1]
