Read an AI chat privacy policy before sharing personal details.

A friendly chat interface can make a personal conversation feel informal. Before sharing details, look at the service’s published privacy information and your available controls. This guide offers a reading worksheet, with specific examples from Replika and Nomi; it does not rate either service’s security or privacy.

1. Decide what belongs in the conversation

Start with the task you want help with. Can you explain it using a broad situation instead of names, addresses, account numbers, or private messages from someone else? Prepare a less identifying version before opening the chat. Avoid adding a detail merely because the interface asks a conversational follow-up.

Nomi’s policy explicitly discourages personally identifying information in interactions or customizations. Replika instructs users not to provide third-party personal data or sensitive categories of personal information. Read the actual service’s boundaries before assuming a personal companion is an appropriate place for every kind of disclosure.

2. Look for answers under separate headings

Use the privacy policy linked from the official service, and record its version date and the date you read it. Search within the page for the subjects below, then read the surrounding paragraph. A keyword alone does not show the conditions or exceptions attached to a statement.

ATN privacy-reading worksheet
QuestionWhat to record
CollectionWhich account, conversation, upload, device, and usage information is covered?
UseWhat is used to generate replies, personalize the service, improve systems, or advertise?
SharingWhich providers or other recipients may receive information, and for what purpose?
RetentionHow long is information kept, and which exceptions are described?
ControlsWhere can you change settings, request a copy, or ask for deletion?

Leave a question marked unclear when the policy does not answer it. Do not fill the gap with a marketing slogan or another user’s assumption.

3. Separate advertising from conversational processing

Replika’s policy says conversation content is not used for marketing or advertising. Separately, it describes sending conversation data, with stated minimization and de-identification measures, to third-party AI providers to generate replies. Those providers are contractually prohibited from using it to train their own models. The policy also describes internal use of anonymized information for improvement and safety.

The practical lesson is to ask one question at a time. A statement about advertising does not answer who processes a reply, whether information supports internal improvements, or how long records remain. Keep each answer tied to the relevant policy section.

4. Read deletion and access details together

Find the deletion route before you need it. Check whether the wording concerns a message, conversation history, an account, or a broader personal-data request. Note the stated timing and exceptions. Also look for a way to ask a precise question if the controls do not explain what will happen.

Nomi’s policy, for example, includes qualifications for training and communications archives and legal records, alongside account-deletion language. That is a reason to read beyond the delete button. Do not treat an interface disappearing as proof of every underlying record being removed.

5. Turn the reading into a practical boundary

Write a short personal rule such as: “I will use broad scenarios, leave out other people’s private details, and avoid uploading documents I would not want processed under this policy.” Your rule should reflect your purpose and the questions the service has actually answered.

Revisit the policy when you try a new feature, upload a different kind of material, or receive a change notice. Save only the notes you need; you do not need to build another archive of sensitive conversations to track a privacy decision. If a material question remains unanswered, hold back the information while you seek clarification.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE

Your quick checklist

  • I can describe the task without unnecessary identifying details.
  • I checked the official policy and recorded its version.
  • I separated advertising, response generation, and system improvement.
  • I found the deletion route and read its qualifications.
  • I have a clear boundary for information I will share.
